Today would have been Maya Angelou’s 90th birthday! I would like to celebrate this incredible woman with a poem I have written in her honour. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
MAYA ANGELOU – I NEVER MET HER YET I MISS HER
Sassy and sophisticated, elegant and eloquent,
her voice had an energy, an instant clarity,
an unmistakable fruity tone.
Her entrance, majestic, at six foot, fantastic,
her aura was all her own.
Then came her delivery,
Captivating and confident.
Waxing lyrical, she sprinkled that ‘Maya Magic’
and held a room in the palm of her hand,
her every word, engaging and compelling, as if a command.
Poetry in motion ‘Maya Angelou’ had you mesmerised and spellbound.
With piercing and brutal honesty,
she unravelled and shared her life’s story,
in all its colourful glory, leaving you both shaken and stirred.
Like an awakening, you soaked up her every word,
for as she spoke … she taught,
“IF YOU SAY SOMEONE’S WALKING OVER YOU, YOU ARE STANDING IN THE WAY”
she would say.
I never met you, yet I miss you!
So thank you Aunt Maya for all you inspire and for feeding our fire,
your fire burns bright, a shining light for generations, forever!
You do make us proud, so we’ll shout it out loud,
you are the perfect rainbow in the cloud.
